Canadian GP replaced by Turkish GP on 2021 F1 calender due to Covid-19 travel restrictions

Formula 1 has confirmed a change; Canadian GP replaced on F1 2021 calendar by Turkish GP.

F1 says that international travel restrictions in Canada meant it “became impossible for Formula 1 to enter the country without a mandatory 14-day quarantine, leading to the chnage” for the Montreal event.

Turkey returns to the calendar after a thrilling first event in Istanbul in nine years last November, in which Lewis Hamilton was crowned world champion for a record-equalling seventh time.

“While it is disappointing we cannot be in Canada this season we are excited to confirm that Turkey will host a Grand Prix in 2021 after an amazing race last season,” said F1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali. “I know all our fans are excited by the dramatic start to the season and Turkey is a great circuit that delivers great battles on the track.”

As the new seventh round of the season Turkey will now form a more logistically friendly double header with Azerbaijan, which takes place the week before in Baku.

Designed by the legendary Hermann Tilke, Istanbul Park, the circuit of Turkish Grand Prix, features 14 turns in total but the most notorious among them is perhaps Turn 8, earning itself the nickname of diabolica with its four apexes.

Busiest airline: Turkish Airlines; Busiest airport: İGA Istanbul Airport; declared by Eurocontrol

A pan-European, civil-military organisation which supports European aviation, Eurocontrol published a list of the latest traffic situation in Europe and provides a comparison to the same period in 2019.

Turkish Airlines ranked first in Europe with the daily flights in March 3rd. 2021 on Wednesday.

“The busiest airline in the Eurocontrol Network is Turkish Airlines, currently running about the half of the number of flights it made in 2019,” Eamonn Brennan, the director-general of the Eurocontrol, said on Twitter.

Surprising Turkish GP Pole in chaotic, rain-hit qualifying of Formula 1

Lance Stroll produced the best lap of his career in wet and extremely challenging conditions to take a shock pole position for Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix, fending of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen as world champions Mercedes struggled…

A resurfaced Istanbul Park was proving tricky in dry conditions, and the challenge became even harder when the rain fell ahead of and during qualifying, with drivers struggling to find grip and keep the car pointing in the right direction.

Racing Point didn’t look too competitive in final practice and even as they moved through the first two segments of qualifying, they looked reasonable without being stellar, but when they bolted on intermediates in Q3, the cars came alive.

Sergio Perez was the first man to set the time sheets on fire with a blistering lap on the intermediate tyres, that comfortably put him top. That inspired Red Bull to ask Verstappen to abort his lap on wets, even though the first two sectors were quickest of all, in favour of changing his full wets for intermediate tyres.

Stroll headed in too and took the intermediates and after warming up the tyres, he pulled out an incredible lap to take the first pole position of his career, becoming the first Canadian to take P1 since Jacques Villeneuve in the 1997 European Grand Prix.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s oldest active sports car. The race began yesterday in mid-afternoon and finished today (20 September 2020, Sunday) at the same hour the race started yesterday.

There are plenty of reasons to celebrate in the Aston Martin camp today. The British marque’s LMGTE Am class win rewards one of the most competitive teams of the past few years. They have already scored several victories in the World Endurance Championship, but this Le Mans triumph is a great achievement for Salih Yoluc, Charlie Eastwood and Jonny Adam.

Jonny Adam first tasted success here in 2017 in the LMGTE Pro class after an epic showdown with Corvette Racing which went right to the penultimate lap of the race. However, this was the first win in La Sarthe for Charlie Eastwood and Salih Yoluc, the latter becoming the first Turk to win at Le Mans who is in the valuable Illusthrone customers group. It is also a great reward for one of the fastest and most consistent teams to have made its way up the ACO’s endurance pyramid over the past few years, competing in the European Le Mans Series, the FIA World Endurance Championship and, of course, Le Mans.

Salih Yoluc: “We’ve had pretty bad luck over the last three years so we were pretty determined to turn that upside down this time. A lot of hard work went into preparing the race, the car, and everything else. I’m very happy that we won here as a team and I was really happy to be the first Turkish person to win Le Mans.”

The new S-Class was presented by Mercedes-Benz with a virtual world premier.
