Jeff Koons’ contemporary art ‘Rabbit’ Breaks World Record, Selling for $91 Million

A Jeff Koons sculpture sold for $91.1 million at Christie’s in New York on Wednesday, setting the record for most expensive sale of work by a living artist.

“Rabbit” was bought for $91,075,000 by Robert Mnuchin (father of the Secretary of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin). It sold for about $20 million more than its estimated price.

Koons’ studio created the 41-inch stainless steel piece in 1986. There are three other castings of “Rabbit,” all currently in museum collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, The Broad Art Foundation in Los Angeles, and the National Museum of Qatar.

The sale cements Jeff Koons as one of the most expensive artists alive today — although opinion of his work differs. According to Christie’s, “Rabbit” has been called “cute, sinister, cartoonish, imposing, vacuous, sexy, chilling, dazzling and iconic.”

It is not the first time that a Koons work has set the record for most expensive piece of art by a living artist. Although the previous record-holder was David Hockney (his “Portrait of an Artist” sold for just over $90 million at Christie’s in November), before that, “Balloon Dog (Orange)” held the record for five years, selling for $58 million in 2013.

Antalya welcomes 2.3 million visitors

In the first 4.5 months of this year, Turkey’s top Mediterranean resort province Antalya welcomed 2.3 million tourists from 178 countries. The province hosted as many tourists as its own population of around 2.5 million. According to the Antalya Provincial Culture and Tourism Administration, the number of visitors in the period between Jan. 1 and May 15 recorded a 24 percent increase compared to the same period of last year.

In the first four and half month of 2018, Antalya had hosted nearly 1.9 million foreign visitors.

Russians topped the list of foreign tourists coming to the Mediterranean coastal town in the aforementioned period. The number of Russians rose by 30 percent and reached 819,406.

Germans ranked second with 475,198 visitors and were followed by 140,606 British tourists. Antalya also welcomed visitors from the Netherlands, Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Israel and Denmark. The Mediterranean resort city hosted 12.4 million foreign visitors in 2018, according to the Culture and Tourism Ministry.

“Google Trips” Now Puts All Your Travel Planning in One Place

If you’re like most people, when planning a trip you’re spending weeks (or even months) researching, doing dozens of searches, making a handful of reservations, and going back and forth on platforms and sites trying to keep it all organized. Now Google has a plan to fix that.

Google announced Tuesday a new feature that will put everything related to your next trip in one place. Google’s Trips which you can get to either by making travel-related searches in Google, or by navigating to google.com/travel, will now automatically organize all your travel planning.

Richard Holden, vice president of product management at Google, told “Travel planning is multisession in nature — it takes place over many days, many weeks. Any trip content you have will be featured on that page.”

Trips provides easy access to Google’s powerhouse travel tools, including flight and hotel search, while featuring both your confirmed reservations and whatever you’ve been considering in your searches.

“If you make a reservation via flight search or hotel search and get an email in Gmail confirming that reservation, we’ll automatically take that content,” Holden told. “And when you next type that, take you back into it.”

So, for example; if you’re headed to Istanbul this summer, the next time you search “Istanbul”, Google will know you aren’t looking for basic information. Instead, if you have a flight booked or were already researching The Grand Bazaar, expect to see content tailored to you.

“We’ve spent a lot of time over the past number of years trying to make our subverticals (hotel search flight search) more comprehensive,” Holden told. “What we haven’t done yet is help the user connect the dots.”

Google plans to roll out the unified Trips info in Google Maps in the next few months.
